At North Lake College, we want our students to be involved as global citizens in the local community and beyond. One of the projects we have worked on to engage our Blazers on real world issues is the Sole Hope Project.
NLC has worked with the organization Sole Hope to collect denim donations to help make shoes for Ugandan children since Fall 2016. In the last 2 years, North Lake, in partnership with Richland College, has made over 1,000 shoes. We are kicking off the 3rd annual project this year, and you can join us in making a difference!
Sole Hope is a nonprofit founded to help serve impoverished Ugandans suffering from a crippling parasite called jiggers. Under the leadership of the NLC Global Citizenship Committee, students and employees work together to create shoe patterns designed for the Sole Hope shoes from denim donations. After the patterns have been collected at North Lake, they are shipped to Uganda to be assembled by local shoemakers and tailors to make shoes for those in need.
How can I help? Here are three things you can do!
1. Donate Jeans
Jeans are being collected in boxes across campus until Monday, April 22. The location of boxes include:
– Across the bookstore (near H200)
– Liberal Arts office
– Welcome Center
– A300 level (by the stairs)
2. Participate in the Shoe Cutting Party
Put your hands to work at the come-and-go event by helping trace and cut shoe patterns during Tuesday, April 23 – Thursday, April 25 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in H226. If you are a student, you can earn service learning hours by volunteering. For questions about service learning, email Katherine Villarreal at kvillarreal@dcccd.edu.
3. Donate to Sole Hope
You can also help change lives by donating to Sole Hope during April 23-25. Place your donation in the Sole Hope container found in Student Life (H200).
