“Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay, but we can honor their sacrifice.” ~ President Barack Obama

For most of us, Memorial Day is a celebration of a three-day weekend, but like other federal holidays, its initial purpose was not for backyard cookouts and parades. As for the loved ones of a fallen patriot, it’s a day of remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice that was made. This Memorial Day message will identify ways you can pay your respects.

Many pay their respects by visiting cemeteries and national monuments, including the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery and the Arlington National Cemetery. There are many dedicated memorial sites throughout the country that honor our fallen patriots as well. Other ways to show your respects would include flying the American flag at half-staff until noon, wearing red poppies on your clothing or hat, and by pausing in national unity for one minute at 3 p.m. (National Moment of Remembrance).

In addition to celebrating the beginning of summer, this Memorial Day set aside time to remember our fallen patriots for their personal sacrifices. Because of them, our nation is stronger, safer, and remains a shining beacon of freedom for the world.
