Have you ever wanted to play the piano but were unsure of your capability to do so?

Do you find it difficult learning on your own without direction?

Well, the campus has just what you need, whether you have moderate experience or none.

North Lake College’s music department offers, accessible and engaging classes designed for your needs.

The  program offers coursework in music theory, musicianship and jazz improvisation for all levels of musicians.

Scholarships are available for classes within the program. Last year, more than $500 in scholarships were awarded.

Music Program Coordinator Jim Eger, who has been the Jazz Ensemble Director for about 20 years, wants students who are not aware that there is a music degree available.

“We have the Associate Degree with a Field of Study in Music, designed for transfer to a university.

This includes music theory, ear training, ensembles, music literature, private lessons, piano, guitar and voice classes, and our core classes such as music appreciation,” he said.

For those interested in pursuing music as a major in the future or want to challenge themselves, the Jazz and the Voice Ensemble are great options.

The Jazz Ensemble plays at various events during the academic year.

The ensemble has played for the Commencement Ceremony consecutively for the past five years.

In addition, the ensemble played this year’s “National Night Out” for the second time in two years, and at Veterans Day Celebration hosted by Veterans Affairs.

An extension of the music program is the Jazz Club, whose objective is to “promote a general musical appreciation for listeners and discover musical talent from participants, regardless of declared major.”

In an interview regarding his experience as a student of the music program and Jazz Club, treasurer Oziel Esparza said, “It’s a great way to express yourself while learning something new.”

The last 18 months have been the most active for the club.

Students in the club have been graciously awarded the opportunity to provide music for the monthly artist receptions hosted by Gallery Director, Steven Benezue.

The Jazz Club welcomes anyone with a passion for music regardless of major.

They are also open to students with other degree plans who wish to learn an instrument or continue playing music after high school.

All students, whether young or old, can benefit from learning an instrument.

Music is for pleasure; however, it also brings people together in a way that can only be experienced first-hand.

To get involved in the music program, sign up for a piano or guitar class, or find out more information by contacting Jim Eger at jeger@dcccd.edu.
