Burning Man is an annual festival celebrating “community, art, self-expression and self-reliance” in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada.

This year, NLC faculty members Lisa Gabriel, Kate Jenkins, and Trevor Bennett will have the opportunity to showcase their talents at the event.

As part of Lisa’s Burning Man Project, she’s invited employees and students to create and submit their own letter design. She’ll then share these as part of the typeface she is designing and entering into a juried showcase at the festival.

INSTRUCTIONS FROM LISA ON HOW TO DESIGN YOUR OWN LETTER FORM

I’m designing a Burning Man Typeface to enter in the 2D gallery at the festival. It is great fun to design letters, so I thought I would develop a project for everyone who is interested in participating,  a chance to design their own letters for me to share at the event.

To begin, choose your favorite letter (you can choose up to (2) letters). Perhaps  it’s  your initials  or maybe it’s two of your favorite letters that have meaning to you. Then express yourself in your letter designs. Take a look at the samples below of sketchbook letter possibilities. Burning Man is a place for self expression… so have fun and explore. But please keep  your ideas appropriate.

Design Specifications: Your design should be black and white, however you can submit an additional version in color. Each letter form should be 6 x 6 inches and drawn in vector format—Illustrator, EPS or PDF document. If you are creating the letters by hand please shoot a high-quality photo (300dpi) and submit a Photoshop or TIFF document. Please send designs and questions to Lisa Gabriel at lgabriel@dcccd.edu.
